How does the Renown System work?
The Renown System was created by Blizzard to reward players for exploring Sanctuary [1]. When players discover landmarks or complete content within a Region, they receive Renown Points.

Earning Renown Points
Completing the following accomplishments within a Region reward Renown Points:

Unlocking Renown rewards
When a player has accumulated enough Renown Points, they can unlock rewards. Each Region has 5 rewards to unlock, and each of those rewards is split into 2 types:
- Character-level reward: the active character receives the reward
- Account-level reward: all of a player's characters (even future ones) receive the reward
Below are how many Renown Points are needed to unlock the character-level and account-level bonuses for each reward:

Note that the last 2 out of 5 rewards in a Region require the player to be in World Tier 3 difficulty.
