Villages
Diablo 4 will have over 100 unique villages for players to find and explore. Each has different vendors.
Map mechanics
Map waypoints
Map waypoints allow players to travel long distances instantaneously. They unlock after clearing Strongholds.
Minimap
Blizzard built multiple quality-of-life features into the Diablo 4 minimap, including destination routing.
Open world
While exploring Sanctuary, players can randomly find other players, huge world bosses, and random events.
Renown System
The Renown System rewards players for thoroughly exploring a region. Some rewards are account-level.
World map size
Diablo 4's explorable map will be 10 to 20 times larger than in past Diablo games. Mounts will be important.
Random spawns
Chests
Players can expect the thrill of finding chests while exploring. Some, like Silent Chests, are locked with keys.
Local Events

Special areas
Hell

Secret cow level
Given that the past two Diablo games had secret Cow Levels, Diablo 4 will likely carry on the tradition.
A huge, diverse world to explore
The Diablo 4 map is 10-20 times larger than past Diablo games, dotted with hundreds of interesting destinations to explore, including Dungeons, Strongholds, and towns. Mounts and Waypoints are vital in quickly traversing the huge world.
See other players in the Open World
Sanctuary is now an Open World, meaning that players can chance upon dozens of other players (mostly in larger towns, like Kyovashad, but sometimes while out exploring). Random players can join forces to complete Events and take down massive World Bosses for big rewards.
Open World map is fixed
Although the layout of the Open World is fixed (i.e., landmarks are in the same spot each time a player visits), players can expect lots of serendipitous occurrences, like random Events, Helltide areas, and Elite Monster sightings.
Exploration rewarded with Renown system
Blizzard created the Renown system to encourage players to explore the off the beaten path areas of the map. Players are given Renown Points for discovering new areas, completing Dungeons and Side Quests, and more. The rewards are significant, like extra Skill Points and Paragon Points.
