What happens when you die in Diablo 4?
Players are penalized in 2 ways when they die in Diablo 4 (Softcore):
- Backtracking from a safe Checkpoint
- Losing 10% item durability
On the plus side, a player's Healing Potion Charges and Cooldowns are reset.
Respawning at the last Checkpoint
After a player dies, a spirit hovers over their body and a foggy shroud covers the screen. Assuming the player isn't revived by another player, they're given a prompt to "Revive at Checkpoint." The Checkpoint will be a nearby area that the player has already passed through (i.e., likely safe).
Death icons on minimap
Also, the minimap will show the location of:
- Player's corpse: a Celtic-like cross icon; white if solo, or, if in a Party, their Party member color
- Other players' corpses: also a Celtic-like cross icon; white if they're not in the player's Party, or, if they're in the player's Party, their Party member color
- Elite monster: white skull icon
- Boss or World Boss: white skull icon with horns
Lost equipment durability
In addition, all Armor and Weapons (not Jewelry) that the player's character had equipped when they died will lose 10% of their durability. Damaged items can be repaired at the Blacksmith for a Gold fee.
0% durability
Players can continue using damaged items until the items reach 0%, at which point they become broken (they'll show as equipped, but won't count towards any stats). Diablo 4 will warn players before any of their items are close to 0% durability.
Consistent death penalty across World Tiers
All World Tier difficulty levels have the same death penalty. Note, though, that with each progressive World Tier, everything is harder, including the monsters and resistance levels, so the chance of dying is much higher.
Previous death penalties
During Alpha, slain players also had to respawn at the nearest Checkpoint, but instead of losing item durability, they lost an amount of Gold.
TOPHow do you revive slain players?
Players can revive other players by left-clicking their white spirit on the battlefield. The revival process takes about 5 seconds, and if it's interrupted by a monster's attack, it has to be restarted.
No party requirement to revive
Players don't have to be partied to revive each other, which is especially useful in Events and World Boss fights, where lots of random players collaborate together.
