Switch version of Diablo 4

Not included in release platforms

Unlike Diablo 3, which has a Nintendo Switch port, Diablo 4 is unlikely to appear on the popular console, which has now sold over 100 million units. Blizzard released the latest release platforms for the game in June 2022, which lists PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, but failed to mention the Switch.

Hardware not powerful enough

The Switch was released in early 2017. Even at that time, its technical specs [1] lagged its console competitors, PlayStation and Xbox. Nintendo, instead of hardware, relied on the strength of the Switch's game library. While Blizzard was able to eke out enough performance from the Switch's hardware to successfully port Diablo 3, it's highly unlikely Diablo 4's demanding graphics would run on the dated specs below:

  • Chipset: Nvidia Tegra X1, Quad-core, 1.02 GHz clock speed
  • Video output: 1080p, 1920x1080, and 60 FPS in docked mode
  • Storage: 32GB

In addition, we expect Diablo 4 to take up 80-100GB storage, which far exceeds the Switch's built-in storage capacity. Granted, most Switch owners augment the default storage with a much larger SD card, but 80-100GB is pushing it. For comparison, the Diablo 3 Switch version took up 15.3GB of storage.

Rumors of Switch Pro

Recently, multiple rumors have appeared about the existence of a Nintendo Switch Pro version. If true, this refreshed version would release sometime in 2023-2024 and include 4K graphics support and an overclocked version of the same Nvidia Tegra X1 chip. While this improves upon the hardware situation of the original Switch, we still doubt it'd be enough to play Diablo 4 in all its glory.

Too Gory for Nintendo ecosystem?

Nintendo's consoles have always been seen as the most family-friendly. Although Diablo 3, a Mature-rated game, was released on the Switch, it was more fantasy-inspired as opposed to the darker-themed Diablo 4, which will include decapitations, incineration, and cultist rituals and sacrifices.
