Confirmed: No Diablo 4 Mac/MacOS version
Diablo 4 successfully launched on June 5, 2023 [1] on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Despite outcries from many Mac users, Blizzard decided not to have a native Diablo 4 Mac version.
This could be a reaction to Apple not making gaming a priority for its non-mobile hardware lineup. Gaming companies, like Blizzard, are having to put more effort (and money) into porting to Apple's ecosystem.
For Mac owners with pre-M1 silicon, they should be able to utilize Boot Camp to play Diablo 4 without too many issues. Those with hardware using M1 and M2 chips are likely out of luck, although some users have begun experimenting with virtualization solutions, like Parallels and CrossOver. There's been no confirmed reports of those working yet.
Are M1 & M2 Macs compatible with Diablo 4?
No, the M1 and M2 architecture is incompatible with Diablo 4. An M1 Beta testers reported that the game didn't recognize a GPU [2], among other issues:
Apple's 2023 Mac roadmap
The success of the M1 chipset (and now M2) has led Apple to nearly double its marketshare in the PC space, going from 8% in 2022 to 15% in 2023. While Blizzard decided not to bring Diablo 4 to Macs for launch, if Apple continues gaining PC marketshare, Blizzard could reconsider native Mac releases down the road.
2023 will bring even more devices powered by M1 and M2 chips. Below are the rumored releases:
Device | Chipset | Release |
---|---|---|
MacBook Air 2023 (15") | M2 | 2023 H2 |
MacBook Studio 2023 | M2 Ultra & M2 Max | 2023 H2 |
Mac Pro 2023 | M2 Ultra | 2023 H2 |
Can you use Boot Camp to play Diablo 4?
Running Diablo 4 on a Windows 10 partition using MacOS's Boot Camp has been confirmed to work on more modern Macs (that is, right before the M1 cutoff), but not without issues. Historically, players using Boot Camp have had to jump through hoops, like running the game in windowed mode, as an administrator, and/or lowering the graphics settings.
A redditor got the Diablo 4 Beta working on a 2020 13" Macbook Pro [3], but experienced some graphics issues:
TOPPast Diablo games' MacOS support
Throughout Diablo's history, native MacOS support seems to skip a generation. Diablo 4, which doesn't natively support Macs, will follow in the shoes of:
- Diablo 2: Resurrected
- Diablo 2
Whereas, the below entries in the series did have dedicated Mac versions:
- Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls
- Diablo 3
- Diablo 1: Hellfire
- Diablo 1
Microsoft's icy stance towards Apple
Microsoft and Apple have a long, contentious past. If Microsoft's acquisition of Activision/Blizzard [4] goes through in 2023, the chance for seeing Mac ports of Blizzard's games going forward, like Diablo 4 MacOS, may become less likely. The same may be true for seeing future Blizzard games on Sony's PlayStation, which is in fierce competition with Microsoft's Xbox gaming system.
