Will Diablo 4 have expansions?
On Diablo 4's release day (6/5/23), Diablo General Manager, Rod Fergusson, confirmed that multiple Diablo 4 expansions are underway [1], with one just starting and another having been in development for an undisclosed period:
"We're about to release the main game, we're finishing up Season 1, we're working on Season 2, we're working on expansion 1, we're kicking off expansion 2… we're working on that now [haha] and we haven't even launched the game."Rod Fergusson · General Manager of Diablo Franchise ·
Popular Diablo YouTuber, Rhykker, also confirmed this in a December 2022 interview with the Diablo 4 developers [2]:
"The devs confirmed that they plan to have regular story expansions -- expansions plural."
What content will the Diablo 4 expansions add?
In addition to expanding Diablo 4's story, Blizzard could add new:
- Classes (the crowd favorite, Paladin, perhaps?)
- Playable territory on Sanctuary's world map
- Skills
- Dungeons
- Unique and Legendary items
- Monsters, including Bosses and World Bosses
- Mounts
- and more...

At Diablo 4's launch, Blizzard is only utilizing about a fourth of the land available in Sanctuary, leaving a lot for use in future expansions. Add in the fact that Diablo 4's playable regions are 10-20 times larger than those in past Diablo games.
How much will the Diablo 4 expansions cost?
Like past Diablo expansions, the D4 expansions will be an additional fee to the base game (and require the base game), but be cheaper than the base game. Also, note that an expansion is separate from a Season. The latter runs every three months, and players can choose to purchase a Season Pass that unlocks cosmetics. Expansions are more full-fledged, containing a lot more content.
