Scroll of Escape in Diablo 4

Scroll to escape dangerous situations

The Scroll of Escape is a consumable that teleports a player to safety [1]. It's commonly used in Hardcore mode, when a player realizes they've encountered a pack of Monsters they can't survive.

"This is a challenging problem from an engineering point of view. We don't want to solve it by making Hardcore not matter. There's an expectation of what Hardcore means. In Diablo 4, we have a consumable that's rare and limited. If you're in a dangerous situation, you can use the item to escape. The Scroll of Escape."

Not automatically consumed before disconnect

During Diablo 4's development, Blizzard said that the Scroll of Escape would automatically be consumed in a player's inventory if the game detected that the player was disconnecting; however, that feature didn't make it into launch. Hardcore players under this false assumption should especially take note of this. Blizzard stated in a June 16, 2023 Campfire Chat that the Scroll of Escape's auto-trigger feature will likely make it into Season 2.

Scroll of Escape drop rate

Blizzard intended the Scroll of Escape to be a rare drop. End-game players have reported only finding a handful of them during their playing time. The item begins dropping around Player Level 20, which is its level requirement.

Keybind and emote wheel for quick Scroll of Escape use

Top Diablo 4 Hardcore players often bind their Scroll of Escapes to the tilde key (`), which is beside the default Skill keybinds (1-4).

They can also add access to the item on their Emote Wheel by:

  • Pressing 'e' to bring up the Emote Wheel
  • Clicking 'Customize'
  • Selecting 'Consumables' tab
  • Clicking 'Scroll of Escape' (assuming the player has one)

These methods are much more efficient than opening up the Inventory Screen, clicking the 'Consumables' tab, and frantically searching for the scroll on every use.
