Duriel boss in Diablo 4

An introduction to Duriel

Duriel, The Lord of Pain, is a grub-like boss that first appeared in Diablo 2. He spawns in a cramped chamber and burrows into its ground, creating craters. He also hatches numerous Plague Maggots, which swarm players. His most vicious attack grabs players and puts them in his stomach.

Duriel spawn location

Players meet Duriel in Act VI, when they're tasked with exploring underneath the Kehjistan city of Caldeum in the hopes of finding Lilith. He appears in a dimly lit, earthy room that has larvae around its perimeter. Defeating Duriel completes The Walls Shake Quest.

Duriel Healing Potion drops

Players have 2 opportunities to receive Healing Potion Charge drops from Duriel. These are the upside-down triangles on his health bar.

Duriel Stagger bar

A Boss's Stagger bar appears under its health bar and tracks how much Crowd Control damage the Boss has taken. Once the bar is full, the Boss is incapacitated for 12 seconds, in which time the player should deliver as much damage as possible.

Duriel special attacks

Swallow attack

Duriel's most damaging attack involves grabbing the player and pulling them into his poisonous and teeth-filled stomach. Depending on a player's defenses, this can deplete over half of a player's Life. Before grabbing a player, Duriel makes a stomping motion, so be sure to Evade from his front.

Plague Maggots

When Duriel burrows into the ground, about a dozen Plague Maggots hatch and swarm the player. They do little damage and one or two rounds of area of effect damage should take care of them.

Craters from burrowing

Although Duriel's burrowing into the ground doesn't damage the player, it leaves craters behind, which can't be walked over. Near the end of the battle, they can confine the player's movement.

Stab attack

Duriel will quite frequently attempt to stab players with his crab-like arms. These attacks cause small to medium damage.

Eject poison from stomach

At some points in the battle, Duriel will open his stomach and eject poison, damaging any players in front of him. When players see the vertical line in his stomach open, they can Evade.
